inspired so many up-and-coming players as well as attracting scores of fans.

The 33-year-old striker made the announcement after extended his contract with Corinthians yesterday. During his remaining time with the club, Ronaldo says he is “hoping to have some fun and win many significant titles.”

Ronaldo is so loved, I know he will be missed. I can remember the first time I really watched him play – the 1994 World Cup (which was won by Brazil). Hopefully, he will continue to play an active role in the sport.

The Canadian men’s soccer team will be traveling to Argentina this spring to play a friendly match in the weeks leading up to the World Cup in South Africa.

It’s a big deal since this will mark the first time that the Canadians will face the South American team in an international men’s competition.

Team Canada’s head coach, Stephen Hart, said: "When you’re talking world football, you can’t talk about it without mentioning Argentina.

They are one of the greatest nations in the game. This is a huge game for Canada and its players."

The game will take place on May 24, 2010 at Estadio Monumental on May 24.

Money woes have forced FC Moscow to pull out of the Russian league since they have been unable to secure sponsorship. It’s particularly disheartening because there is just a month before the 2010 season begins.

It’s a little surprising to me since FC Moscow is owned by Norilsk Nickel, a metals giant in the country but they claim that the move has a good explanation: "We cannot persuade the residents of Norilsk why the company’s money should be spent in Moscow. With no support from (the city of) Moscow or other structures we consider this project a dead end."

This must be a real crushing blow to the club. They did so well last season, far exceeding expectations.

It has been a week of uncertainty since the doctors first had to focus on saving his life (which is pretty remarkable considering the fact that he was shot in the head) and then they have had to determine the extent of his injuries. He has started to move his extremities which is a sign that he has some brain function which is, of course, a major concern. The swelling in his brain has gone down but there really is no other information regarding his prognosis yet.

My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. I wish him a speedy recovery.

In an effort to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, the MLS and the MLS Players Union will continue to negotiate through February 12, 2010 and I’m hoping they can come to some sort of reasonable compromise.

Commissioner Don Garber said: "While we still have areas of disagreement, the talks have been constructive and both parties believe it makes sense to continue to work hard to reach agreement. This extension provides both MLS and the players the opportunity to continue our discussions while clubs are in training camps preparing for the 2010 MLS season."

Players Union Executive Director, Bob Foose, added: "Both the Players Union and MLS have concluded that a new agreement will not be reached by February 1, but we have agreed to continue to talk and we will be meeting over the next two weeks to determine if a new agreement can be reached. In the meantime, MLS Players are reporting to training camp, and preparations for the 2010 season will continue."

It’s not surprising, though, that this is taking some time and effort on both sides. I’m sure the players and the club owners will be glad when this is all resolved.

Even though he hasn’t played in Canada’s last 12 games doesn’t mean he isn’t qualified – he has captained the national team before on July 9, 2005 at the Gold Cup and on January 22, 2006 in a friendly. Both matches were against the US and neither resulted in a win (the first was a 2-0 loss and the second was a draw).

Canada should have a slight edge over Jamaica as they are ranked 56th in the world compared with the Caribbean nation’s 81st place standing.

From the reports, it appears that he was sitting down and observing the event. Medical personnel tried to revive him at the stadium but he ultimately was pronounced dead in the ambulance.

How tragic! Can you imagine how traumatizing that was for the other spectators!?

Why do soccer players choose head butting as their aggressive attack of choice? It has become so commonplace on the field that after a guy accused his coach of head butting him in the locker room after a game no one seems to think twice.

The Queen’s Park Rangers manager Jim Magilton has been accused of head butting midfielder Akos Buzsaky after confronting him after a match that went poorly for them. Magilton has denied any wrongdoings and is fully cooperating with authorities who are looking into the matter.

Sounds to me like Buzsaky didn’t like the tong lashing he was receiving and cried abuse. Man soccer players need to toughen up.

More teams are going to be included into the upcoming 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup games. With the games expanding in the world it makes more sense to add more teams to the World Cup so that that more teams are given the chance to play.

The World Cup is the biggest sporting even in the world, yet the women’s version of the game is more humble. That however is changing as more and more women are taking to the field professionally.

FIFA organizers have said that the current cap of just 16 teams will be bumped to 24. Having more teams in the World Cup is a sign that the popularity of the game played by women is increasing.

FIFA officials are now considering adding extra referees or using TV replay to help officiate important games. Currently decisions have to be made on the spot and because of this many infractions slip past the eyes of the refs or are simply miss-called.

The decision to change FIFA’s officiating rules comes after France’s Henry deliberatly touched the ball to send France into the lead against Ireland in an important World Cup Qualifying match.

Personally I don’t see what the big deal is in allowing cameras the chance to replay to officials certain plays that come into question or are challenged by the coaches. If it wasn’t for the help of replays Hockey would be very different. If you aren’t going to allow cameras than you need to have more refs on the field. In a game like soccer this isn’t such a big deal since the field is so big, but in a game like hockey of basketball you want to have fewer refs and more TV replay action.

What do you all feel about FIFA decision to amend the reffing rules?
