Even though he hasn’t played in Canada’s last 12 games doesn’t mean he isn’t qualified – he has captained the national team before on July 9, 2005 at the Gold Cup and on January 22, 2006 in a friendly. Both matches were against the US and neither resulted in a win (the first was a 2-0 loss and the second was a draw).

Canada should have a slight edge over Jamaica as they are ranked 56th in the world compared with the Caribbean nation’s 81st place standing.

The FIFA rankings of world teams have been released and Spain toped all the charts as the overall best team in the world. Not bad considering the competition – every other team in the world! In a close second was Brazil followed by The Netherlands.

The United States were placed at a decent 14, not bad for a team that only just recently created a competitive soccer league. Canada has also made impressions as they moved from 90th place to tie with Bolivia for 56th place. At 56th place they may not make it into the South Africa World Cup but this recent rankings prove that they are on the right track.

Canada’s head coach Stephen Hart has high hopes for Canada and their drive towards the World Cup. The Canadian National Soccer team never seems to make it through the World Cup qualifying rounds. In fact the last time Canada even played in the World Cup was in 1986.

Stephen Hart – New Canada Soccer head coach

Hart plans on changing all of that and has promised to give more power and authority to their strong players and build their team to a level they would be comfortable with.

With Toronto in the MLS and Vancouver soon to follow, the game od soccer is emerging as a sport for Canada. It may not be as popular in Canada as Hockey but it might just become a nation pastime. Let’s hope that Canada makes it next time and that they are funded to a point where they can be supported as true athletes.
