Stephen Strasburg made people care about baseball again. Even casual fans were circling their calendars and setting their DVRs to a get a glimpse of the rookie phenom. No other player in baseball garnered comparable attention.

But now it’s all over.

On Friday, the Washington Nationals announced that Strasburg has a torn elbow ligament in his pitching arm and will most likely require Tommy John surgery. While Strasburg should eventually recover, baseball will feel the pain. The sport needed Strasburg.

The 22-year-old more than lived up to the hype of being the number one overall pick of the 2009 MLB Draft. In 12 starts, Strasburg had a 2.91 ERA to go along with 92 strikeouts in only 68 innings.

Going forward, the Nationals need to be smart. Since Tommy John surgery has a 12-to-18 month recovery process, Strasburg shouldn’t only miss the rest of this season, he should be held out of next season as well. It would be unwise for Strasburg to be on the mound prior to the 2012 season.

In the meantime, people will revert to not caring about baseball anymore.

Here’s the video of the Stephen Strasburg press conference:

Jamal Crawford won the Sixth Man of the Year award last season. Fitting a specific role for the first time in his career, Crawford finally lived up to his potential. But now the 6-foot-5 guard reportedly wants out. According to ESPN.com, Crawford will soon ask for a trade.

The issue at hand is Crawford wanting a contract extension from the Atlanta Hawks. He’ll be making million this upcoming season — but he wants more money on top in future years. The 30-year-old supposedly wants an extension that will keep him under contract until he’s 34.

While Crawford is a good player, it’s understandable that the Hawks wouldn’t break the bank for him. After signing Joe Johnson this summer for nearly 0 million, it’d be unwise to sign Crawford to big bucks, especially considering that the two players are primarily shooting guards.

Last season, Crawford came off the bench in all 79 games and averaged 18 points, three assists and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 44.9% from the floor, 38.2% from beyond the three-point arc and 85.7% at the line.

Luna’s body was discovered by her mother and the cause of death has yet to be determined. Luna was staying at her mother’s house because her own home had recently burned down.

Tiger Woods wasn’t a very good golfer after his sex scandal up until his divorce was finalized. However, in his first round of golf since his divorce, Tiger Woods looked like the Tiger Woods we all had grown accustomed to watching. At the Barclays, Tiger Woods shot a first round 6-under 65 to sit on the top of the leaderboard.

Said Tiger: “It’s exciting to hit the ball flush again; it’s something I’ve been missing all year.”

A happy wife at home has also been missing all year. In his case, no wife appears to be better than an unhappy wife. Although, Tiger wouldn’t directly come out and say it.

“I can’t really say that’s the case. As far as golf, it was nice to put it together,” remarked Tiger.

It’ll be interesting to see if he can hold on for the win and get his golf game back in order. And hey, if he wins this tournament, he doesn’t have to worry about losing half of the paycheck.

The St. Louis Rams can’t catch a break. They’ve struggled in every aspect of the game in the last few years. In fact, last year they were so bad that they ended up with the number one pick in the draft. This year, too, is starting off on the wrong foot. According to sources close to the Rams, wide receiver Donnie Avery will miss the entire season after suffering a torn ACL in a preseason game on Thursday against the New England Patriots.

In the second quarter, Donnie Avery jumped for a pass and grabbed at his knee after landing. He had to be carted off the field and was obviously in pain. Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo wasn’t optimistic when talking to the press after the exhibition game.

Said Spagnuolo: “Donnie probably has a significant knee injury. We will know a little bit more when we get the tests.”

Entering his third season, Donnie Avery had 100 catches for 1,263 yards and eight touchdowns in his first two years in the NFL. He was expected to be one of St. Louis’ main weapons on the offensive side of the football field this season … but that won’t happen after the torn ACL.

Here’s a Donnie Avery highlight video:

According to numerous reports, the Chicago White Sox are about to acquire Manny Ramirez. What will the Los Angeles Dodgers get in return? Nothing. And that’s exactly what the Dodgers wanted.

A couple days ago, the White Sox claimed Ramirez off of waivers. At that point, the Dodgers could have pulled back Ramirez, traded Ramirez to the White Sox or let the White Sox absorb his contract. The third option appears to be what is about to happen.

In this scenario, the White Sox will owe Ramirez the final ,825,000 left on his contract for the rest of the season. Chicago actually has been trying to get the Dodgers to take one of their prospects and, in return, take on some of that guaranteed money. At this point, that doesn’t appear likely.

Even though Ramirez is 38 years old, he can still hit the ball. He’s hitting .311 this season with eight homers, 40 RBIs and 32 runs in 65 games. If he can stay healthy and on the field, the White Sox will be getting a player that can help the team make a run at the divisional title.

Baseball managers are the best when it comes to getting ejected. They ham it up and give the fans something to talk about. The manager of the State College Spikes had one of the better performances we’ve seen in recent years. Watch the video below to a see the manager get ejected, steal first base, autograph it and give it away to a fan.

The manager, Gary Robinson, started his tirade by putting dirt over home plate — making sure to completely cover it. He then jogged to first base, bent over and pulled it out of the ground. On his way to the dugout, he pulled a pen out of his jersey and signed the base. He located a kid in the crowd and gave him the base.

After the happy kid gives the camera a thumbs up, a member of the field crew comes sprinting into the picture with a replacement first base.

All in all, the manager stealing first base makes this video a must-see:

When it comes to natural wide receivers in the NFL, Antonio Bryant is near the top of the list. He’s big, fast, athletic and has good hands. But due to injuries and immaturity, Bryant has failed to truly live up to his potential. This offseason, the Cincinnati Bengals looked past Bryant’s red flags and signed him to a million contract.

It was truly a gamble by the Bengals — a gamble that the Bengals lost.

On Sunday, the Bengals released Antonio Bryant. In doing so, the Bengals must hand over the million that was guaranteed to the talented wide receiver.

Two things doomed Bryant’s chances in Cincinnati: a knee injury and Terrell Owens. Bryant said that he could never move well enough and thus missed all the team’s preseason games. During those preseason games, Owens has shined. Owens and Chad Ochocinco are the dynamic duo the Bengals will roll with this season after rolling snake eyes on the Antonio Bryant gamble.

Team USA beat Slovenia on Sunday to begin their journey to World Championship gold by winning their first two games. In their 99-77 victory, Kevin Durant led the way with 22 points. Off the bench, Kevin Love chipped in with ten points and 11 rebounds.

This game wasn’t as easy as the final score indicates. In fact, Slovenia was within five points shortly before halftime. The small European nation featured a number of players with NBA experience including Goran Dragic, Bostjan Nachbar and Primoz Brezec. But Team USA exploded at the end of the second quarter to take a 14-point lead into the second half and never look back.

The other Americans in double-figures were Rudy Gay (16), Russell Westbrook (11) and Andre Iguodala (11). Slovenia was led by Nachbar’s 13 points.

On Monday, Team USA faces its biggest challenge to date when they take on Brazil. Brazil’s talented size (most notably Anderson Varejao and Tiago Splitter) might give the Americans trouble. Then again, Team USA seems to be hitting on all cylinders right now.

Fumbles are part of the game of football. If you have the pigskin in your hands a lot, you are going to put it on the ground sooner or later. But check out this epic football fumble fail video to see an epic fumble like no other.

After the quarterback takes the snap, he runs an option play to the left side. Not seeing an opening, the QB pitches the ball to the running back. The pitch hit the running back in the head and he had to stop to catch the ball. By that time, the defense was all over the play. This is when the play starts becoming classic.

The running back sprints the wrong way in a feeble attempt to break free from the defense. With a defender literally riding his back, the running back appears to give up. Quit — right on the spot.

Unbelievably, the running back throws the ball up in the air. Why? No clue. The defense then recovers the intentional fumble and score a touchdown.

You have to watch the video of the epic football fumble fail to believe it:
